The Science of Happiness: 3 Habits That Can Change Your Life

Have you ever wondered why some people seem naturally happier than others?

More importantly...

Can you actually become happier?

According to decades of research in positive psychology, the answer is yes.

In this solo episode of Laugh or Death, I'm diving into the science behind sustainable happiness—not the kind that comes from buying something new or having a great weekend, but the kind that changes the overall trajectory of your life.

For years I had the opportunity to work with Delivering Happiness, the company that grew out of Zappos' legendary workplace culture. That experience introduced me to the research of experts like Sonja Lyubomirsky and Shawn Achor and completely changed how I think about happiness.

In this episode, I share three simple habits that research shows can increase your long-term happiness:

  • Building stronger connections with the people around you.

  • Taking control of your thoughts through intentional optimism.

  • Celebrating progress instead of waiting for perfection.

Along the way we talk about why happiness is more like a climate than today's weather, why our brains naturally focus on the negative, and how gratitude, relationships, and small daily wins can literally reshape the way we experience life.

I also share one of the hardest seasons Kelly and I have ever walked through—losing nearly everything in a house fire—and how these same principles helped us stay grounded when life felt completely out of our control.

Whether you're trying to become a better leader, a better friend, or simply a happier person, I hope this episode gives you a few practical tools you can start using today.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why happiness isn't just luck or personality.

  • The science behind your happiness "set point."

  • Why your brain naturally focuses on the negative.

  • The three biggest drivers of sustainable happiness.

  • How optimism can be trained.

  • Why social connection matters more than you think.

  • The power of expressing gratitude.

  • Why celebrating progress keeps us motivated.

  • Lessons learned after losing our home in a fire.

  • Simple habits you can start today.
